The history of Texaid

In 1973, six renowned Swiss charity aid organizations (SRK, Winterhilfe Schweiz, Solidar Suisse, Caritas Schweiz, Kolping Schweiz, HEKS) came together for the purpose of coordinating and optimizing their used clothes collections. Together with a private partner, they founded TEXAID Textilverwertungs-AG in 1978. Their aim: Professionally sorting and recycling used textiles.

First steps

The partnership between TEXAID and the aid organizations began with the search for a suitable location. This needed to have good transport connections and at the same time be in an economically weak region in order to create jobs there. The choice was made in favor of Schattdorf in the mountain canton of Uri. Before it was possible to occupy the Schattdorf sorting facility in 1982, TEXAID had already started work in a temporary location in Brunnen.
