to improve performance and achieve greater con- trol over the process of reintroducing employees into the work-place. Strategy workshops were conducted in Germany in the beginning of 2017 with department, team and regional managers. Suggestions and action plan recommendations for the implementation of “Strategy 2020” were collected from both compa- ny and employee perspective and then evaluated accordingly during these workshops. Eastern Europe and Morocco As part of a social audit, working conditions in Hungary, Bulgaria and Morocco were externally audited in 2016 and 2017. The audit was based on standards of the International Labor Organi- zation (ILO) and Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR), best practices and experiences of the audit company. Goal of the audit was to support and assist the companies on their way to achieving social and ethical sustainability. The results helped create a social improvement plan with measures aimed at improving work condi- tions. In particular the audit identified topics rela- ted to work health and safety, personnel manage- ment and employment conditions. An in-house work group is overseeing the imple- mentation process and advising the local manage- ment team. The next external audits will be con- ducted as part of amfori’s BSCI program. Initial work safety upgrades have been completed in the sorting facilities (e.g. improvements to the fire protection gates, ramps, general electrics and fire extinguisher stations). 47
